for Cumberland County District Attorney

because we can do better.

Valerie’s priorities

We can do better, and we should do better. Prosecution isn't just about securing convictions and sending people to jail. It's a very real opportunity to change someone's life for the better, whether that is a victim, an offender, or a member of our community.

  • Refocusing efforts on serious, violent crime will ensure that offenders are held accountable, communities are safe, and victims’ voices are heard. By clearly differentiating between those offenses worthy of special attention and those better handled through diversion, we will free up resources and become more effective advocates. • As District Attorney, I intend to expand and standardize diversion opportunities, including developing a formal pre-charge diversion program, so that first-time, low-level offenders do not become unnecessarily caught up in the system. Diverion does not mean that offenders are not held accountable. It means that offenders are held accountable and given an opportunity for redemption. Learn more about the details.

  • There are so many reasons that people commit crimes, but we cannot solve the problem of criminal activity through prosecution alone. As District Attorney, I intend to work collaboratively with law enforcement, healthcare and social service providers, the criminal defense bar, and community stakeholders to start to tackle some of these complex problems.
